Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Steven Wright follows through on a pitch to the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning of a baseball game in Baltimore, Monday, May 30, 2016.
As We was covering the showdown between the Red Sox & Orioles for FOX Sports 1340am & the Flex Zone, Memorial Day is known as the kickoff to summer but for more importantly for the Baltimore Orioles it was the kickoff to an important home stand that includes bitter rivals Boston and New York. Monday started a four game series against the Red Sox who came into today a full game ahead of the Orioles in the AL East.
The Boston Red Sox extended that AL East lead to two games with a 7-2 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards capped off by a four run eight inning that included Marco Hernandez ‘s first career homer run which was a three run dagger of Mychael Givens. David Ortiz added his 14th home run of the year and number 517 of his career. Jackie Bradley Jr. recorded his first career hit at Camden Yards and it was a home run to straight away center field.
Xander Bogaerts continued his hot streak going 2-4 with two RBI’s and a two doubles extending his MLB best hitting streak to 23 games. Not to be lost in the hitting of the Red Sox was the masterful pitching performance by the knuckle baller Steven Wright (5-4) going the distance with a complete game seven strike out effort only allowing two runs
Tyler Wilson (2-4) takes the loss as he did not pitch bad himself going six and two thirds innings striking out four and giving up three runs. The Orioles got to Wright in the fifth inning with Ryan Flaherty and Adam Jones both knocking in runs but the hits came few and far between for the Orioles. Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo went 0-8 combined against Wright with both striking out twice, along with the 1st 5 hitters in the lineup went 0-17 vs. Wright yesterday.
DOUBLE UP The Boston Red Sox added to their major league leading doubles total with two by Xander Bogaerts bringing them to 133 on the season.
UP NEXT Eduardo Rodriguez will return from the disabled list and make his season debut against the Orioles who originally drafted him. Kevin Gausman (0-2, 3.24) will look for his first win.
Starting pitcher Tyler Wilson #63 of the Baltimore Orioles and teammates stand with members of the United States Armed Forces before playing against the Boston Red Sox at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on May 30, 2016 in Baltimore, Maryland.
